You know you are a Rickman Diva if you are willing to get that blasted passport with all my secrets that even I cannot read from my genetic code to be allowed into the USA only to be able to see Alan on that stage that he might be showing up on.

Up to now I refused to have my passport changed. I really do not know why the USA need a sample of my genetic code to let me into their country.

Wow... I'm not a world traveller so I guess I missed the whole DNA/passport thing. That seems quite invasive if you ask me. I have not gotten my passport - I've only travelled to Canada tho now we need one for there as well... but I wasn't aware I'd have to give up any genetic material to do so. Do they require a blood sample, tissue (like a cheek swab), or a hair sample? Regardless, it seems unnecessary unless one has something in their background that would make them suspicious.

Magenta was being ironic. It's biometric data and fingerprints they want. You need a photo that meets specific criteria, you're not allowed to smile, have to look at the camera in a specific angle, all in all, you look and are treated like a criminal...
I had my passport renewed a week before the new regulations were passed, so it is good until 2015. I'll still have to give fingerprints at the customs if I want to travel to the US, but at least I'm going to have a fairly decent photo while my passport is still valid.

Ups,
ähm,
sorry.

It would be only for going into the USA, subjects of the USA do not need that. You do not even need an identity card or other regulized way of identification. My passport is valid till about 2011, so If I leave my fingerprints I should be able to go.

Sorry for the uproar.

Oh, that's good to know regarding the passports!! I was thinking there was a major violation of human rights going on and it whipped my activist Aquarian tendancies into an uproar, LOL!!

And yes, Jackie.... Kevin Costner was making a rather sad attempt at an accent. My 7 year old son can do a better one (of course 50% of the time we watch the BBC or films made in Britain, so I guess he's bound to pick it up.)

If only Costner had thought of that...

You know, it's half fun, full earnest for me. The biometric data and the fingerprints feel like a violation of my rights.

I have lived on the Canada/US border pretty much all of my life and have therefore crossed many, many times for shopping or dinner or vacation by both land and sea (St.Lawrence river). I do have a valid passport but we still do not need a passport to enter the US or re-enter Canada by land or sea. I use mine anyway because it shortens delays at the border. Here is the current info for US citizens. "Canada technically does not require a passport for US citizens arriving by plane to Canada, however, the US does require a passport to get back in; therefore no passport - no boarding a plane to Canada. US citizens arriving in Canada by land or water do not need a passport until at least summer 2009." Both Canadians and Americans crossing the border by land or sea must have ID with at least one having a picture but, again, a passport makes things much easier.

I'll give them whatever samples they want Exclamation just so I can get to the UK!!

Semp: from what I've seen in pictures, that is such a beautiful area. are you near Boldt Castle?? I would love to visit there, that whole area looks so beautiful. there's also a very long bridge there, sorry, don't remember the name, but I have a thing for bridges....(weird again, huh?)

The bridge here is called The Ivy Lea Bridge. It actually consists of 7 spans. Here are some pictures:

Even though Boldt Castle is on the American side of the river we are very near it and have boats tours here in town that you can take every day May-Oct. to see the castle. They let you off for an hour or so and you can peruse the property and castle on your own. Here is a (not so professionally done but informative) web site for you to look at:

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/3702/boldt1.html

When you grow up in this area chances are you've been there a number of times through out your life. The pictures in this web site are what you would see now if you were to visit. When I was a child it was just an empty shell. There was nothing inside the castle but graffiti and some bare bulbs to light the way. The pool was full of granite and you could not get into the power house as the stone bridge had fallen into the river. The money raised by the visits to the island have slowly brought it up to (almost) its intended grandeur and it still is not finished.

WOW...yea, that's the bridge! It's so beautiful! the whole area is just so pretty, all those trees and waterways...so different from where I live.
Not that we don't have trees, we do, but so many were cut down to make way for farmland so many years ago, it's hard to believe they were ever there.

and the story of Boldt Castle is beautiful...and sad. I just love architecture, and old buildings, and yes bridges....
that's one thing I loved about NYC (and Chicago and New Orleans) I walked around with my camera just taking pics of all these buildings that had so much character. I have one pic of a NY building that I have no idea where it is, or what it is, but I love it!
I don't know what my bridge obsession is...

Here is an incredible bridge in France:

and an article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millau_Viaduct

I really want to drive across this bridge someday. (Mr. Bean did on his holiday!)
