I agreed with the first 3 of the best British actors, but Hugh Grant left me at a loss. He's not that great - he usually plays the same sort of character, which p*sses me off after a while. I would definitely have put Alan, Ian McKellen and Laurence Olivier above him. In fact I would have put him below McAvoy, because he's a brilliant new talent. Craig is very good, but I don't know whether I would have put him above or below Grant, although he does show some variation in the characters he plays - I adored 'Enduring Love' and 'Casino Royale'. I feel that Alan could have ranked a little higher.
I was glad to see Withnail and I getting acknowledgement as a great British film. I agree with the Best Actresses, up until where they think that Keira Knightly is a better actress than... any of those below her, especially Julie Christie and Emma Thompson. And in general I prefer Rachel Wiesz to Keira aswell.
Sorry I got a bit carried away with that... _________________ :.*My Flavour Of Choice? Alan. Of The Rickman Variety*.: |

I don't know if he would take a Knighthood. He's not into bowing for Royalty etc - I heard him say that on a talk show. But I'm sure he must have been considered at least. _________________ :.*My Flavour Of Choice? Alan. Of The Rickman Variety*.: |

I had wondered if he would accept it either...I think with all of his contributions in film and theater, plus his charitble work, he deserves it before many others who have received it. But, maybe that's not how it works... _________________ ~~~Nora~~~

I don't agree with that list. Sean Connery wasn't a bad bond, but he wasn't that great an actor, and I think after seeing Daniel Craig, it is easy to see. Hugh Grant is a no. I saw An awfully big adventure on youtube and was pleasantly surprised to see him playing a character that was different. It's ok in sense and sensibility, because he is meant to be like that, but most other films just seem to be written for hugh grant. Can you tell I'm not a fan?!
I agree wholeheartedly with Anthony Hopkins however, so thats ok. The films though?! Four weddings before Life of Brian- who the hell has been voting?
(sorry, just had to get that off my chest) |

Completely agree with you. Hugh Grant is just Hugh Grant in whatever role he plays (bar An Awfully Big Adventure). Anthony Hopkins is pretty good too. But Four Weddings and a Funeral??? Come on...I can think of Hundreds of films MUCH better than that one! _________________ Alan Rickman...*sigh*... enough said.

Four weddings... was on tv here this weekend, just watched bits of it. I think it's a sweet move, but not that great! The funeral scene is just beautiful, with that poem... makes me cry everytime.
Don't really agree with that list either... |

Very true, Marie..."Stop all the Clocks" is beautiful, and John Hannah recites it with such emotion...it did make me cry . That is the films one saving grace....but there are better overall films out there! _________________ Alan Rickman...*sigh*... enough said.

Well, personally, I like Hugh Grant, I think he's adorable, but as far as acting ability....he's not that great, no.
Of course he shouldn't be #1, and no way should he be above Alan.
I didn't love "Four Weddings and a Funeral", tho, there are other movies of his that I liked much better, but none that should be the best British film ever, don't know what that would be, really.
HG was best in "About A Boy" as far as playing a different character, and in AABA, he was just an a**hole. And I do love "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down A Mountain", I've watched it so many times, just again last week, in fact.
How about "Educating Rita" for a best movie... love that movie....and Michael Caine...
just reread that article, Hugh is #4 not #1, sorry.... _________________ ~~~Nora~~~
