I finally got to see Mesmer last night. I was able to get it from the library. Now, I am not one to swoon, no matter how amazing I think Alan is, but I think I can officially say I did while watching this movie. Yes, there were some disturbing parts, but he was....."OH. HOLY. CRAP. I'm going to die" amazing in this movie.

The low, slow speaking, all the hand movement, the billowy robe. I was transfixed. He totally tapped into this character for Snape. He even did the slow crossing of the arms while wrapping his robe around him, and the quick turn while pointing his finger, like he does with his wand. He SOUNDED like Snape in this. Every time I watch HP, I'm going to think of this movie now.

I think this is my new favorite. I must own this movie.

Okay, enough of my starry-eyed rambling. Smile

Greyspark, thanks for the hint! Your enthusiastic review made me buy the DVD, I'll get back to this thread when I have seen the movie.

His character Mesmer is right up there for me as one of the sexy characters he plays. He made me shiver in this role.

I finally managed to watch Mesmer tonight. I was surprised to see Anna Thalbach (Francisca) in it, I had no idea she'd ever been in a movie with Alan.
The movie had a couple of very weird scenes, like the one with all the homeless and beggars in the garden, but the story is very interesting. I googled Maria Theresia von Paradis and found that today it is believed that her blindness was psychosomatic, so Mesmer wasn't that wrong, after all.

His ideas were spot on....he just needed fine tuning. But, I agree, there were strange scenes. The one in Paris with all the ladies getting hysterical amused me!!!!

After being thrown out of his (not so very) comfortable position with a wealthy wife Mesmer had to earn some money somehow. And I have to admit I would fake any sickness in the book to make Alan play that scarf game with me.
Emotional or mental illnesses were not treated well in those times. Mesmer's idea to treat those illnesses was not the worst that could happen to those people.
