I know we already have a couple of interesting threads about the books going, but I thought I'd make a thread for general film discussion (the films themselves as well as the actors involved).

I found this article today about the Equus promotional shots that were recently released. While I have no problems with the photos themselves, I think it's an interesting commentary on the social construction of physical beauty. Check it out here. What do you guys think?

uh, I don't know.. I don't like dan and neither am I interested in what he does besides the HP movies. though, those equus pictures were like everywhere and it was hard not to notice 8D;

the article... well, I think the writer overdid it a bit, but I can't say I disagree completely O_o if you look at the description of the book!potter the movie!potter seems indeed a little too much of a good-looking guy, but then again... which character looks like it's said in the book?
even our beloved mr rickman is a little too handsome for the creepy professor snape Wink

dan can try and get his body even more hairy Rolling Eyes but he'll always be remembered as the potter-boy in everyone's head..

I don't know if she overdid it, though. Perhaps it's not as prevalent outside of the States, but this country is absolutely obsessed with the physical beauty of its celebrities.

It doesn't stop at them either, I've noticed that within the past 5-10 years this aesthetic ideal has come to be what is expected of the entire population. I'm not saying it wasn't always, but it has reached a fever pitch. When you have 16 year olds going in to get plastic surgery (everything from nose jobs to breast augmentation), there is something seriously wrong.

We have moved from adult admiration of Marilyn Monroe’s alabaster complexion to perfectly crafted and precociously sexualized children.

I completely agree with this quote as well. Watch any film with child actors (anyone over the age of 10 or 11) and you will see that their physical appearance is highly sexualized. I think Little Miss Sunshine is extremely refreshing for just this reason - it calls out the American public on its obsession with sex and physical beauty and its treatment of children in those regards.

I only have to say that these pictures are really beautiful. Not for the boy, not for the girl, just the composition of the human figures and the horse, I think they're beautiful pieces of art.

I have no idea why this would be an issue, being Dutch and all (big prejudice there, has no relation to the comment Mr. Green).
But it's true, I don't.

I don't relate to books in the way that I form an image in my head, I form an emotion. And in that way I also look at films, and that makes me kind of oblivious to the looks of the actors. So for me, Book!Harry will always remain a confused and a (disturbingly) more and more angry character.

But it is true people in general (not just in America) are more and more obsessed with 'beauty'. They're not even old enough to drink and are already getting plastical surgery done. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we know that for a fact, so it is logical 'our' celebrities are under a lot of pressure. In my eyes, they are insecure beings that are desperate for approval. So they seek methods to catch that beauty in the eye of the beholder.
And isn't it just coincidental that young girls and boys are caught in the strings of the jellyfish too?
Not with plastical surgery becoming more and more available and affordable.

Another aspect of this is the increasing number of programs on television that deal with beauty, fashion etc. It is kind of pointing a finger at people that if they don't do this and this that way, and don't have that and that, they're outcasts. Nobody wants to be an outcast, right?

I completely agree with you on that one. The photographer definitely knew what they were doing.

I think a lot of the weirdness about the photos is coming out of the States. Unlike in Europe, he isn't of age here so parents and such are getting up in arms about him getting photographed in such a state of undress. That and nudity is just NOT DONE over here the way it is normal on British television. You can blow people's brains out all you want, but God forbid a child see a woman's breast on the screen! And then, here in Spain it's totally different. We don´t care about that at all, on the contrary: to our tv channels is better to show a couple having sex than a lot of blood in an animated show.
So here we're not scandalized for that, but at the same time a lot of people protest if there's too much violence in the Simpsons. It's a real paradox, like in the US, but at the contrary...

You don't really wnat to know. I think he should have waited till the HP movies were over. He would be a little older, and wouldn't have as much of the pressure of being Harry the role model actor and the heartthrob of little girls.

Anyway, I agree that the photos were gorgeous! and not for the boy. Very beautifully captured.

I don't know if that's being fair to him as an actor. He shouldn't have to limit his choice of roles just because he's considered a heartthrob by teenage girls. He's 17 and plenty old enough to play the part, not to mention that if he had waited until the movies had finished, he may not have gotten the chance. He's got to prove himself now so that he's not just a gimmick however many years from now the movies are done.

While watching the new trailer ( which is great, by the way ), Umbridge made me think there's now a lot of actors in HP who were in Sense and Sensibility too...
She's the sixth to join the cast, if I'm correct, with Alan, Emma Thompson, Fudge, Pomfrey and the Fat Lady ( HP 1 & 2 ).
And Hugh Grant was originally cast for Lockhart XD

All of their characters are so different than in S&S, it's funny to see them all reunited with such different personnalities ( and costumes ! like Brandon/Snape and Elinor/Trelawney Laughing )

I'm sorry for the randomness of this comment (8 It's just.. I think it's funny X)

And let's hope they'll find a role in HP6 for the lovely Mr Palmer °w°

Was he really? I could definitely see him playing the fop, though Ken Branagh, I think, was a better choice.

That happens a lot in the British film industry, though. Everyone ends up in a million of the same films. It's not quite the same here in the States where the industry is much bigger.

I remember reading this kind of thing when HP2 was released. And IMDb mentions it in the 'Trivia' part.
I agree with you, Kenneth Branagh was fabulous, but I'd have like to see Hugh Grant's performance X)

That's why I love watching British movies/series ^^ I love searching for hours where I've already seen one or another guy...
Especially Midsomer Murders, in my case. ( besides, I dare you to find another show with Orlando Bloom being skewered with a pitchfork Twisted Evil )

I think that's why I love HP movies despite all the drastic cuts in the scenario. There's such a brilliant cast !

I have been reading various reports that say (and dispute) that Naomi Watts has been cast as Narcissa Malfoy. I like Naomi but I don't necessarily think she's right for the role. My inclinations would be toward Cate Blanchett or Tilda Swinton. Any thoughts, or "wish lists" for new characters that will be appearing in HBP??

Last I heard, Naomi's camp denied the rumors... I guess in a certain sense, I could see her as Draco's mother.. but in the books, Narcissa has facial features that, yes, can't be 100% recreated... I more think that a very blonde Nicole Kidman would be perfect... her beauty is a complete oppisite to Helena Whateverhernameis' Bellatrix.
