Patricia, check out my post about release dates on News and Updates: Nobel Son. As for the Die Hard extras, I have the two disc set in the metal case and, yah, there could never be enough Alan. However, I did enjoy the 'Outtakes: Magazine Articles' section where they show the actual making and filming of the Hans Gruber death drop scene. Like Ipsmith said, it was interesting and you get to see film footage of AR's face and body before he's dropped, as he's dropped and after he's dropped laying on the blue screen mat. There's also some scenes in 'Outakes: the vault' where you can just worship his voice and appearance as usual.
Is it weird that seeing him lying on that blue mat made me feel all hot and *ahem* I mean all warm and fuzzy? Embarassed Good grief, I've got it bad ladies. Rolling Eyes

I watched the original version of "Die Hard" for the first time yesterday (the dubbed German version is very different because the terrorists are not German in it), so I just have to share my impressions of Hans Gruber.

Hot? Definitely, yes. Scary? There are some scary moments, you never know what he is going to do next. But unfortunately, the director/writer saw it fit to drop in some bits of German at the most dramatic moments.
And that is the problem because the script is dreadful.
All in all, the "Die Hard" terrorists are too polite. "Oh dear, the police!" isn't exactly what I'd expect them to say (more like "F***, it's the cops!"?), and I almost died laughing when Hans pointed a gun at John and said something like "Thirty-third floor, and I would be much obliged if you cared to hurry, please" (instead of "get your sorry a*** up here!"?). My all-time favourite is the scene in which he tells his cronies to shoot the window: "Schiess dem Fenster" has two grammar errors in three words...

It's a pity Alan didn't get any good material to work with. He hasn't got a chance to be convincing with such a faulty script.

Most actors whose native language is English sound like a bad Hitler impersonation when they play a German character. You can tell that Alan tried not to, which must be hellishly difficult when you're supposed to speak German and don't understand what you're saying.

Curiously, I was unable to dislike Hans because all I saw was Alan struggling with my language as much as I have been struggling with his for the last 20 years. I couldn't help but sympathize, and love him for trying! I'm sure it's not the effect the director intended, LOL.

I'd love to hear Magenta's thoughts on Hans!

Well, I'm not Magenta, and not German, but you know me, I always have an opinion, and can't seem to stop myself from giving it (right Jacksl?!)
I don't know about the whole German language thing, because I obviously don't speak German.
but to me Hans is a scary person just because he's a scociopath. He's very attractive, well dressed, charming, well educated (not all requirements) but he has absolutely no regard for human life...
Proably the scariest type person out there...
that being said, wow is he hot! from the Alan perspective...you can't take your eyes off him, not just because you don't know what he'll do next, but because he's gorgeous! Shocked And, I do love men who dress well (as ZZ Top says "every woman loves a sharp dressed man"!) I'm still working on my husband Wink

I agree with Nora...the fact that he can be so calm and polite without getting angry...and then turn and shoot someone in cold blood....that's the scariest kind of sociopath going!! Makes my blood run cold and then hot at the same time....he's so CONFUSING!!!!

I think Hans is pretty hot myself. In real life, I would probably be peeing my pants if I was in a terrorist situation with someone like Hans Gruber, but watching him, kind of expanding his character in my mind to be someone who is gentle and compassionate at home but leads a sinister double-life... Kind of like Dexter... does anyone watch that? He's so kind to his girlfriend and her kids, but goes around hacking people up... Awful, but compelling at the same time.

I know, you all think I'm twisted... Twisted Evil

You are right, I have thoughts about Hans. I was rather angry that they did not give Alan a proper tutor to learn those few sentences properly. Especially as Alan proved many times that he can use language as a tool of his art. Especially as there were two or three actors there who speak German very well if not native. Hans is very interesting, I hope I would stay away from him in reality, but as a character telling a story I think Hans is attractive, educated and determined. He likes to play multi-layered people. A "exceptional thief" but a person with a love for beauty. I think Hans' well-spoken lines are part of his character as his suit was.

I wonder how bad the script must have been ? The German dubbing cleaned out the rather dump image of the German criminals. So intelligent Germans were able to enjoy the film as well. But as I have a strong liking for the English language I love to watch films in their original language as I prefer to read my novels in English I bought the DVD with the English version.

I admit that I developed a liking for action films after seeing Die Hard. I noticed Alan but I did not get hooked then.

@journalista: I've seen the pilot of Dexter, my bf has recorded it, but I haven't watched much of it yet. It's an interesting premise, I definitely want to see more of it. Dexter reminds me a little of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.

@Magenta: thanks, Magenta, I just knew you'd have something to say on Hans! I feel the same way about watching movies in the original version. And you're right, I had the impression that there were several people on the set who could have helped out. Obviously the director thought it wasn't worth the trouble, the average action movie goer wouldn't notice anyway. Next time Alan plays a German character, let's volunteer to tutor him... Twisted Evil
