Here, kids start to learn english in fourth grade. Than, in seventh grade you choose one more language to study. I took french, from grade 7 to 9, and after that I took spanish for 3 more years.
But english is the only foreign language I'm any good at. I can like order a beer and ask for the way to the trainstation in spanish, and all I can do in french is ask if it bothers anyone if I smoke (wich is totally worthless cause I don't smoke! Rolling Eyes )
I started to read books in english very early on, and I've watched lots and lots of british and american movies and tv-shows so I guess you are bound to pick something up.
But I have to say that lots of swedis people are really terrible at english, and even if they know the correct english words, the swedish accent is just too horrible! "Hello, jaaaa, I'm Inga from Sweden"... Laughing

But it's beautiful speaking Swedish, it's very melodic!!

Our vowels just aren't natural to your way of speaking....but it is nice to listen to!!

Swedish in itself is a really beautiful language, but english with the swedish accent- sounds funny to me. But I guess kind of sweet...

Don't tell me about accents. They're annoying and difficult to get rid of. Part of why I enjoy being on the internet is that people can't hear me Laughing
When I first went to England 7 years ago, my English friends told me quite bluntly that I would have to start speech training all over again. I was in a foul mood and stopped talking for a whole week because it was so depressing - I wanted to become a teacher, after all. It annoyed the hell out of me that my friends, who to my ears didn't speak any better than I did, got compliments on their English all the time and I never got any.
Schools in this country concentrate on written English, they never tell you that your accent is horrible (probably because most teachers have horrible accents, too).
I know I've improved since then, but pronunciation is still my secret obsession, and it is only after the second glass of wine that I stop worrying about it Wink

That's funny, Eustacia, it doesn't sound like you have an accent at all to me!!! Wink
I expect German people to speak English with a German accent....how else are you supposed to talk??
As I've said (too many times) I love different accents, and enjoy listening to people from other places (except Chicago)
Now, I on the other hand, still have way too much hillbilly in my voice...quite embarassing, people think you're stupid if you sound southern, it goes with the territory. Crying or Very sad

Laughing Laughing Your typing is completely accent-free!!!!

Accents are great and make us unique!!
I'm like you Nora....where I come from the accent is quite strong, and we are mocked on TV and such as being more than a little thick....which is not very kind, and I do wish I sounded less country bumpkin and more refined, but that is not to be!!!
...Hagrid has an accent like mine, in case you're wondering, and we are all portrayed as simple folk!!

Still...it could be worse!!

I love Hagrid's accent, Jackie!
And, I know not even all people from the south here, not even say...Alabama or Arkansas (my fam) are uneducated, but it leaves that impression. And, I don't have as much as them, not even as much as my husband...but it's still there...

People in Devon and the West country are portrayed as straw-chewing, in-bred tractor huggers, who are over familiar with either their sisters or sheep....The trouble is, whenever someone from this area goes on a national quiz show,or something similar, they are usually nutters, or a little "unique", shall we say....and just perpetuate the myth!!.....I despair!!

I would probably agree with you if I wasn't a teacher, and if I wasn't German. Students rely on teachers - if we can't pronounce things correctly, how are they supposed to learn? Perhaps it's just my "vaulting ambition", LOL.

Besides, Germans aren't exactly popular abroad, you get associated with the usual stereotypes because your accent is a constant reminder of every awful cliché about Germany. I had an English housemate for a year. When her parents came to visit, I was doing the dishes and cleaning the sink when they arrived. My housemate introduced me, and the first thing their parents said was "Oh, of course, the Germans, always tidy and orderly." I wanted to strangle them, LOL. Their daughter never touched a mop or a dirty plate...

yea, that sounds like Arkansas! There are sooo many jokes about Arkansas people (and other southerners), like Jeff Foxworthy's redneck jokes, like "If your Dad calls your Mom 'sis', you might be a redneck" Laughing

And Eustacia, I'm afraid that's true, there are alot of sterotypes about German people. Not all are bad, tho. And, even here, you do hear the "neat and tidy" stereotype and "hardworking". Alot of that comes from the fact that our town centers on 4 counties, and the counties to the west were all settled by German immigrants (New Baden, Germantown), while the counties more to the east, have a less distinctive heritage (a little of this and that!). And, there is such a difference in work ethic (the western counties have higher employment, patients are insured, in the east, they have lots of "I don't care") the houses and farms (lots of giant dairy farms in the German communities) are all clean and neat, towns are neat, NOT in the eastern areas, it just looks poor and shabby, not mown, old cars in the yards, etc. So, here, there is a good reason for those stereotypes, and the German people are admired for them. (btw, in looking up my family history, I do have alot of German ancestory, they came here in the 1600's, fleeing religious persecution)
Oh, and most of our schools don't like playing the Clinton/Washington county schools in sports, those kids are very athletic, and very large! We put it down to good breeding and lots of milk!
Don't Americans have the sterotype of being loud and annoying? (I know many who are, sometimes me!) Wink

For a couple of months when I stayed with a friend in London I did all the meals. She hated cooking but she loved to eat. Even cooked breakfast. When she realized that I like cooking and shopping for groceries she suggested she would take over all the other chores in the house. I would prepare meals.
First I told her that this would not be a fair deal, but she insisted on it. It was like living in heaven and she seemed to be very happy too. I did more cooking than I would have done under normal circumstances. I would not have two to three cooked meals a day at home. So I think I did a fair amount of work. Still. I was enjoying most of it.
So I am a lazy German.

But a flat mate who does not take over a fair part of all the rubbish work, or offers something I couldn't do myself, such a person would not last long in this houshold.

I remember my grandmother said something about Americans being noisy, but nowadays, it is more the Turkish and Italian immigrants who have the stereotype of being loud (not annoying, though).
The most frequent German stereotype about Americans is that of being shallow, not understanding European culture, because American tourists are known for traveling all of Europe in a week, staying in one place for a day or two at the most.
Of course the stereotype is stupid. We have more paid vacation days (24-30 a year, not counting public holidays) than the average American, and for us, 500 miles is a long distance journey, while most Americans would consider it a short trip. It's a cultural difference, that's all.

Unfortunately, many Germans confirm bad stereotypes when on vacation abroad, they drink too much, complain about the food, the accomodation, the pool being 2 degrees too cold, and reserve deck chairs with their towels at five o'clock in the morning... Wink

The Englishman abroad....well, what can I say.
They have the reputation of being loud, drunken thugs, who only want to eat English food and speak English....and if they don't get understood....SHOUT English.
Unfortunately, they are acting the same way they do at home! There are a core group of English travellers who all congregate on the Costa Del Sol or Majorca....who behave in this way!
Thankfully, I believe people like yourselves realise that not all English people are like this...I hope...but they keep reappearing year after year and do it again and again....I really do despair!!

yes, English people do have a bad reputation, but from what I have seen on my travels, non-english people are quicker about forgetting stereotypes if you turn out to be a good person than we are generally. I personally don't believe in generalising, and I'm quite shocked at some of the opinions which some people have in this country about foreigners. They usually seem to be tabloid readers. . .usually, not always of course. . .that would be generalising.

About the accent thing, I must admit I have a bit of a thing for a man who speaks English with a foreign accent. . .one of my teachers was russian/east european and had the most gorgeous accent, it made it rather difficult to concentrate at times!

I think for accents, the british are the worst, I have travelled a lot around the mediterranean and british people speaking other languages. . .not nice unless it's fluent and properly done, which is rare. I also think we have one of the most boring languages, but maybe that's the way many people speak it now. It's certainly not boring when Alan talks. . . Laughing

Isn't that odd how people perceive other people?
Americans think the English are very reserved, Germans neat & orderly, oh yes, all Italian men are flirts (most of us have never met an actual man from Italy!), and all Asian people are very smart with technology!

And, yes, I've heard about all that vacation time and maternity leave in Europe!! I can't imagine...When you start a new job here, you usually get one week to start off, then after a year you get another week, after 5 years another, etc. Or, you earn so much per day worked as I do, like 6.something hours per 2 weeks (it was 12 hours, which is one day for me, until I quit and came back... Crying or Very sad ) And, if you have a decent job, you get 6 weeks off after having a baby, but alot of people can't afford to do that...and Dads get nothing, maybe a day or so out of their vacation time to stay home and help, that's it.
don't Americans all die earlier from heart disease than people in other countries???
