Yes, it was very daring of him. Not only with the subject matter, but the fact that there is hardly a minute where he isn't on the screen. That's a lot of Alan.

Closet land is really great, and a very important movie too.
It must have been very intense on the set, being just two actors and such a serious subject.
I would have loved to play Madeleine Stowes part, not only to be able to act with Alan, but the part itself would have been such a huge challenge, and it is a story that really needs to be told.

I've just watched this again,...it's even more disturbing....he's so calculating and despicable. The fact that he's been watching her for so long is scary... he is so good, though....totally believable. I find that even scarier.

Just watched this movie for the first time.
@Velouria: I felt the same way about the ending, (SPOILERS ahead, highlight the text with your mouse if you want to read it)

but I think it is supposed to be open, you're not supposed to know whether she's going to be killed, move on to the next torturer or is even set free. My personal interpretation is that she has won - triumphed over this interrogator -, but will be taken to the next one, someone even more twisted, more cruel. She's still cuffed at the end of the movie, and the white light is blinding her, just as it was when she first encountered the Interrogator. It goes on, it never ends, like "Cube" trilogy - after you've mastered the first room, there will be another one, and another one after, like the endless tapes played to her. The audience wants to believe that it's all over, that the heroine either lives or dies, but the answer is withheld from us deliberately. We all want to believe she is set free, but basically, we know that won't happen unless the regime is overthrown and the whole system changed, and even then, there will still be Evil. It's within everyone, and there are factors that can bring it out in everyone, even a sophisticated person (we're told that the Interrogator used to be a college professor, a normal middle class person with a normal middle class life). We don't know what changed him, something might have happened, but it might just be power that corrupts, and he has absolute power over the prisoner.

END OF SPOILERS
As for Alan, he's awesome in this movie (no surprise there). I respond to him the usual way (needing a cold shower, LOL), and I think it's perfectly sane, especially in a scenario that totally focuses on Alan, requires him to express things just with his voice. Then, the movie is supposed to make you identify with the female character, who isdressed in a nightshirt or just her underwear for the whole time and is being asked very intimate questions as well. BUT I'm sure no one here would pick the Interrogator in the "Who is" thread or in my fanfic (at least I hope no one will, not sure I'd be willing to write it).

Yeah, that part seems so challenging!!! I would kill to play such a serious, complex role like that! (Not to mention what I'd do to get to play alongside Alan Rickman in a two person cast... Twisted Evil )
