I read an article by Lani Diane Rich recently, in which she describes the appeal of Jane Austen's male characters. She's actually talking about Colin Firth's Darcy, but made me think of Alan's Colonel Brandon:
"He gives us what we always knew was there, the fantasy man who isn't what he seems, who is deeper than we think, who surprises us. Who loves us even though we reject him. Who gives us a second chance. In a world where most women would be thrilled just to have a man who will take out the garbage without expecting us to throw a parade in response, he is the ultimate fantasy man. He smolders, he pines, he takes action with no thought of reward. He simply... loves.
I'm off to couples therapy with The Husband. I'm in love with a fictional man, and he's threatened by one. What a pair. But, bonus, the police don't come to our home to break up drunken fistfights, so the therapist says we're head and shoulders above many of her other clients."

I'm in love with a man I can never have (AR of course but aren't we all) and my partner couldn't give a damn. God bless him, he really does think he's God's gift to women. _________________

My husband is just completely cerebral... good God, it's like being married to Spock! I think he really believes that I'm an Alan fan strictly because of Alan's superior acting abilities, and that I watch Dr. Who because I just can't get enough of the TARDIS... silly, silly man... _________________ I want to swim in both directions at once. Ah, David Tennant. Yum.
Oh on the book topic - did we establish if there are any Twilight Series fans here? If there are, the movie of Twilight will be out December 12th. I'm really looking forward to it. The kid who plays Cedric in HP will be Edward. _________________ :.*My Flavour Of Choice? Alan. Of The Rickman Variety*.: |

Have anyone read "The lovely bones" by Alice Sebold? I am re-reading it now, for the third time... I just love it.
It is about a 14 year old girl, Susie, who is raped and murdered by a neighbour on her way home from school. After her death, Susie watches life on earth from her personal heaven, she sees how her family's trying to go on with their lives, while Susie herself tries to come to terms with her own death.
I know, this sounds like a really sad book, and it is, but at the same time it is so full of love and hope. I really can recommend it.
And it just discovered that they are turning it into a movie! Peter Jackson is the director, and Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon is in it. |

I have all of Diana Gabaldon's books. I haven't read 'A Breath of Snow and Ashes' yet. I love her Lord John books. She was at a local book store here last September promoting 'Lord John and The Brotherhood of the Blade'. She was great. Very intelligent and a really funny lady. I had her autograph my copy of the above book. _________________

My daughter is obsessed with it! and she had me start reading it, but I've only gotten halfway through the 1st book. I'm just not into it yet. Cailee just said that I have to finish reading them, and there are several website for Twilight Moms, who ignore their husbands because they are in love with Edward! And she is disappointed in the casting of Edward....(I already ignore my husband because of Alan, and now David Cook, I don't need another reason!) _________________ ~~~Nora~~~

I decided to google book exchanges because I had heard there were some out there on the web for people like me, who have boxes of paperbacks under their beds and in their garages, and would dearly LOVE to trade them for something new to read.
But, what I found was something interesting, called BookCrossing.com
it's a site, based on the same concept as "where's George" where you try to track a dollar bill around the world (or country) but this is tracking books. If you have a book, you set it free, with a book crossing ID# and website written in. Hopefully the next person to pick it up, will go to the website, register the book, and after reading it, set it free again. You can also directly exchange books with others, be involved in a reading ring, or a "book box" where you send a whole box of books to the next person, who takes out a few books, adds a few, and sends it on. Cool, huh?
The rate of books actually being re-registered when found, is only about 25%, but considering that they have over 4 million books registered, that's not so bad. and they have 150 countries involved.
I signed up, and I'm going to register some of my books, and set them free somewhere...Starbucks, grocery stores, and public transportation seem to be popular spots.
I'm registered as anglophile61, so if anyone registers, please put me in as a reference! (I like that name, I should use it for everything....)
It seems like such a cool idea! check it out:

Yeah, remembering usernames can be tricky. I usaually go way too creative on usernames and passwords, pick words that no human could ever remember!
That's why I decided to go with just my first name here.
Trillian is from The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, one of my all time favourites.
I'm gonna realase a book into the wild later, have the perfect place for it! A bench in a park where lots of dog-owners walk by. Exiting! |

Please keep us informed about the adventures of your books.
At work we exchange books. We have a big basket and everyone who loves to read can put books into it. This way I have borrowed several novels that I were interested in but did not buy because I wanted to spend my funds on different books, dvds, cds or whatever. When finished with the book I return it to the basket and others can borrow it as well. If someone wants to keep it, the person puts her or his name in it and after a year in the basket the book is handed over to the one. Works very well. And there are so very different tastes among my colleagues, you find the most astonishing books. _________________ Alan Rickman('s) Acting touches nerves you have absolutely no control over. |

Magenta, if you wanted you could still register your books at bookcrossing, then your friends could read them and if they passed them on to other people, the books could travel around the world. Do they all come back to the basket only, or sometimes not?
They said books can get sold to used book stores, and travel that way, too. As long as they have a bookcrossing ID#, then they can be tracked.
I'm looking forward to releasing my 1st book, tonight, I'm gonna leave it in one of the hospital waiting areas, that seems like a good place. People are always sitting around, waiting (duh!) hopefully someone will pass it on!
one girl from Scotland has released over 600 books, she leaves them when she goes hiking, on mountains, overlooks, etc! I wanna go hiking in Scotland and release books on mountains! _________________ ~~~Nora~~~
