Alright, last year I wasn't quite so on the ball with this, but this year I am! Mr. Rickman's 62nd birthday will be coming up in February. While that may sound like it's quite a while away, the donation page can be open somewhere around 6 months before his birthday!

So, who do we want to make the donation to this year? Last year we were able to raise £550 for Autism Speaks and the year before we did $1,385 for Save The Children. Any ideas?

Well, we did Autism Speaks last year, so I was looking to do a different charity.

It also depends on what charities are affiliated with Just Giving, which is the site I use to set up the donation.

I wanted to do that the first year, but MPH isn't listed on Just Giving. The reason we did Save The Children was because it was part of the groups of charities that made up MPH.

Also, as to Rachel Corrie. I'd have no problem with it, but the politics surrounding the issue are so contentious. I don't want people wanting to donate for his birthday, but having ideological conflicts with the cause, you know? Things like Save the Children and Autism Speaks are more universal.

WWAD??
(WHAT WOULD ALAN DO?)

That is the question! Of course he'd probably appreciate the donation, whichever charity it went to, as long as it was a worthy one.
In my opinion, which is probably worth nothing at all, it may be good to stay away from anything TOO political. BUT, that said, Alan himself NEVER shys away from what he believes in! So there, that's wishy-washy, Charlie Brown!

Well, if it were just me making the donation, I'd have no problem with that. But it has to be something that no one will have a problem donating to. I almost don't even want to suggest Amnesty International as some do not agree with their politics.

Then again, a lot of Alan's fans have a liberal bent. I'm sure we'll figure something out. I'd like to have the donation page up by November or December at the absolute latest.

I like the JDRF idea. My job does that every year. Or, maybe something that has to do with Leukemia since he's going to the benefit show on October 28th.

I probably should have done this one to begin with. Here's the list of charities that you can donate to on the website: http://www.justgiving.com/Process/CharityGuide/default.asp.

Leukemia Research, the charity sponsoring the event Alan will be attending in October, is listed there. I am wondering, though, if maybe we should use the American version of that site this year. I used that one last year because I specifically wanted to donate to Autism Speaks, but I think a lot of people were reticent to donate because of the poor exchange rate.

No, but as I said, I may end up using the US version of the site and I don't think either of those charities are available.

Madam:

I went to the Firstgiving site (U.S. site as directed by the Justgiving site) and I can't find a list of charities there. Am I looking in the wrong place? The Justgiving site gives a number of charities to choose from, but I couldn't find anything like that on the Firstgiving site. Any helpful hints or suggestions?

If you were to use the UK site, I just loved the idea of the Fairybox charity. It's an extension of something I do with my sons every year at holiday time, which is to make special gift boxes for children in need. Anything having to do with children is near and dear to my heart, anyway.

Thanks,
Steph

The Firstgiving site doesn't have a list of charities. I think they allow any US charity, but as I recall you kind of had to go through the process of setting the site up in order to find a list.

As the world is at the moment I think we should do something for a poverty relief charity or amnesty international. I know I have come across a list of charities Alan supports and I am sure there was something poverty related. Most of us come from truly rich countries and still there are children around us who do not get a warm meal every day. I am going to try and find that list of charities Alan supports and look up what there is. Then I will let you know what I found.

I bet some of you will be successful quicker than I can manage it.

By the way, are there really any members of this forum who feel supporting amnesty international would not be a good idea?
