| I would love to donate to Amnesty International, but it's not a charity you can donate to via the donation site (figured that out the first year). |

What about Habitat for Humanity or something like it?? There are so many people who need housing, especially single parent families, and it does so much good. My daughter's good friend from kindergarten on lives in a Habitat home that was built for them about 5 years ago, and it has been just wonderful for him, his 2 brothers and his mom.
I don't know if they have anything like it in the UK or not...
Just another thought,

I checked out the website and it does appear that Habitat for Humanity is international, or at least also exists in the UK. I also like that idea. I think it's a great organization (my mother is very involved in it) and I would agree that it would be a good one to pursue, IMHO...

| So, we've got 2 votes for Habitat For Humanity. That's a pretty big charity in the States, so I'd imagine you could donate to it via that site. |

I'm from Mississippi and there are A LOT of Habitat for humanity homes around here. The local churches provide so many volunteers and the High school kids get some kind of recognition for helping out. It is one of the most worthy causes in need right now. After Katrina hit you would not believe what they were able to do through Habitat for humanity. That's just my opinion...I love Alan

I do think it's a great cause, our community does one or maybe two houses each year. I wish our high school did something with it, too, that's a good idea. It's usually various churches that sponsor it. Our church had a couple of teams that went to the Gulf Coast and worked on houses, but I don't know if it was through Habitat or not. My debit card is set up to donate to it whenever I use it (which is ALOT!!)

You're never too new to have an opinion! I'm counting on all of you to be involved in this and get the word out once we get this thing going!
Which reminds me, does anyone have any friends or anyone they know working for the big Harry Potter sites? I've been able to get Leaky to post a news bulletin about the donation the past couple of years, but Mugglenet never does. |

OK, so I really want to get this donation page up this weekend and let it run for 6 months. At the moment we seem to be converging on Habitat for Humanity.
Is this going to be alright with everyone? |

Here's the description for Habitat For Humanity:
| Quote: | | Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all faiths and walks of life to work together in partnership, building houses with families in need. Under the direction of the Board of Directors, HFHI retains complete control over the use and distribution of donated funds in furtherance of its mission. |
I'd completely forgotten it wasn't a secular organization. I'd really rather choose a different charity so anyone who is either not Christian or not religious will not feel like they're donating to a religious cause. The one I'm looking at now is called The Vaccine Fund and is an international organization that helps get vaccines and immunizations to developing countries. Here's the description:
| Quote: | | The Vaccine Fund's mission is to act as a catalyst harnessing resources so that all the world's children have equal access to lifesaving vaccines. A child in a developing country is 10 times more likely to die of a vaccine-preventable disease than a child in the industrialized world. The Vaccine Fund focuses its energies on bringing vaccines and resources to the world?s poorest countries to end this needless loss of life. Partnering with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), The Vaccine Fund will provide lifesaving vaccines to millions of children around the world, while creating a model for fiscal accountability and collaboration. The Vaccine Fund's mission is simple: to ensure that every child, everywhere has equal access to life-saving vaccines. |
If you want to read more, you can go to their website at www.vaccinefund.org. I think this one is going to be our best bet for the donation this year. If I don't get any objections by tomorrow I'll go ahead and set up the page. |

The Vaccine Fund sounds excellent to me. A very worthwhile and neccessary organization.
I wasn't thinking of Habitat as a Christian organization (didn't realise it was, just knew mostly churches were involved in it in our town), but they do good things.
