Okay, here's a bit of a strange request, but I have some questions on the weather on the British Isles, particularly in Scotland on the lochs. I have googled this until my brain hurts and usually can only come up with metaphoric "storms" regarding the Loch Ness Monster, LOL!!
I know this is an odd request for the Fan Fiction category, but I am working on a novel (not really a fanfic but I thought this was the best place for this category) and I really need some information on the types of storms you get over there. An integral part of the storyline hinges on a storm, and I need to know if there are any so severe that they cause boating accidents, sinkings, deaths, etc. I know here in the States that there have been severe enough storms on the Great Lakes that they have caused ships to sink (notably the Edmund Fitzgerald during a storm on Lake Superior), but I don't want to base my writing on something that happens here that doesn't happen there. Am I making any sense?
I hope someone can give me some info or at least point me in the right direction! Thanks! _________________ I want to swim in both directions at once. Desire success, court failure. ~ Alan Rickman |

Your request makes sense. It will be a nice challenge to collect the information. My brother in law is obsessed with things like these. Maybe he can come up with an answer.
Have you tried wiki on that? Loch-Nessers should be able to give info too. A board on the Monster should be a good source.
So you are writing a book. Well, cheesy soup lady will have to learn that she can have her job all for herself. You won't be needing her much longer. _________________ Alan Rickman('s) Acting touches nerves you have absolutely no control over. |

Okies, I haven't been to the lochs, but on both my most recent trips to Scotland, it was really hot and sunny. On the day I left Edinburgh, there was really thick fog (an odd sight for the end of July). Apparantly the day afterwards was dreach (a Scottish word meaningdamp, soggy, dull, misty, miserable) -the secretary emailed me!
When I went to Glasgow in April, the weather was much different, and whilst we didn't have a storm, the rain was immense. Torrential downpours that lasted about 20 mins. It was like sheets of water, and it that kind of weather, an umbrella is almost useless because the water seems to bounce of the pavement- my jeans were absolutely soaking wet after being out in that!
If it helps, there are some videos on youtube, try typing Glasgow and lightning into youtube. (I was googling glasgow because I was looking for availability of accomodation there). Hopefully that helps a little bit! It at least gets you closer to the lochs! |

Oohhhhh, the fog! I hadn't thought about that... Hmmm.... I really like that idea. That might be perfect! The "sheets of water" is nice imagery too...
Thanks, Skittle...
And Magenta, thanks for your input too. Of course when I tried googling Loch Ness, I got a plethora of information about old Nessie but not much else. I'm sure there's info in the mix that would be helpful, but I'm a bit impatient when it comes to weeding through stuff like that. So if your brother-in-law has any research on hand regarding my question, I'd appreciate anything he comes up with. And... thanks for the vote of confidence re. Cheesy Soup Lady. Nothing will make me happier than the day I smile, put my massive pile of ad copy on her desk, and bid her good day!
I can still use any other information that anyone might have, though... I want to make sure I get the scene I'm writing as accurate as possible. There is a lot of emotion in the scene and I could easily "make up" the details but I'd prefer to have them as authentic as possible.

Hey, Steph, as you may or may not know....I don't know if I've mentioned it!....I was born in Scotland in a place called Helensburgh, on the banks of Loch Lomond. My mum is Scottish, as are half my family.
I haven't been up there in recent years....not since my granddads funeral, but whenever I've been up there, it has always been cold!!
It's always colder than the rest of Britain, and generally has quite a bit of snow in Winter.....it's one of the few places on this island that you can guarantee it.
It can be quite foggy and misty up there too, and rain CAN suddenly hammer down, like Skittle said.
A lot of Scotland is quite barren and uninhabited and that is mainly due to the landscape (big steep hills and mountains) and the severe weather up there......so I feel quite safe in saying that they would have some good storms in Scotland....they get the full force of storms coming off the North Atlantic and the Arctic circle.
We don't often get tornadoes or twisters in this country though....well, the occasional little one, but a severe storm could certainly capsize a boat on a loch!!!
Hope that helps
Good luck, JackieXX _________________ Alan Rickman...*sigh*... enough said.

My grandfather was Scottish, well... half. His father was from Scotland and his mother was from Wales.
I didn't know that! Cool! And thanks for the info... it's very helpful.
(By the way, did you ever know any Clarks, Richmonds, Hughes, or Jones? Those are my family's surnames.) _________________ I want to swim in both directions at once. Desire success, court failure. ~ Alan Rickman |

Well, then... It's a small world after all, LOL!!
I'll have to dig out my family's geneaology books and see what else I can find...
I did read online somewhere that Richmond (my great-great grandmother) and Rickman came from the same family many moons ago... Okaaaayy... that just got a little "Awfully Big Adventure", LOL!! _________________ I want to swim in both directions at once. Desire success, court failure. ~ Alan Rickman |
